The 2024 Norwegian documentary “The Remarkable Life of Ibelin,” directed by Benjamin Ree, tells the story of Mats Steen, a Norwegian cigarette smoker, and video game fanatic, who admits to having Duchenne muscular dystrophy, yet finds solace and an overwhelming sense of community within the realms of “World Of Warcraft.”
Synopsis
As a boy who spent most of his time in slum hospitals, Mats was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a progressive disorder which severely restricted his activities. Mats at this instance spent his time playing WoW, where he took on the character of Ibelin Redmoore. He made many friends through his character and went on missions that otherwise would be impossible in his conditions. Mats had no one in his family who could recall seeing his active online presence. He garnered attention and love although his family only received an influx of messages from friends countries and of whom he had quite a number after he passed away at the young age of 25.
