Dario Argento, born in Rome on September 7, 1940, is an Italian film director, producer, and screenwriter, known for his contributions to the horror film genre and the Italian giallo subgenre.
Early Life and Career
The storytelling of his family fascinated Dario, as he had Salvatore Argento as his father who worked as a film producer, and Elda Luxardo, a Brazilian fashion model, as his mother. His career as a film critic began in the 1960s where he also contributed to Sergio Leone’s film Once Upon a Time in the West by getting his writing credits as well.
Directorial Debut and Rise to Fame
The first of numerous Italian giallo movies by known directors, Dario Argento’s The Crystal Plumage earned him fame and recognition in 1970. He also went ahead to direct other classic films in the genre like Deep Red (1975), and Suspiria (1977) that were known for their stylistic and thrilling storylines.
Notable Works
“Suspiria” (1977): A horror film that has supernatural elements with beautiful exhilarating images and an awful score, making it stand out.
Inferno” (1980): Argento continued the story in this second of the Three Mothers trilogy focusing on dark, supernatural themes.
“Tenebrae” (1982):Like in many films, however Tenebrae returned the audiences back to the giallo genre but with a more enrich storyline combined with suspense.
“Opera” (1987): The film has gained the position thanks to its deep focus and ornate sets, a real tour de force in the oeuvre of Dario Argento.
Subsequent Work and Achievement
Later Argento worked on “The Stendhal Syndrome” (1996), and “Mother of Tears” (2007), the last part of the trilogy The Three Mothers. In 2022, he pledged to shoot “Dark Glasses”, returning to the horror genre.
His reach is multifaceted, not merely confined to directing, he was the producer of Romero’s ‘Dawn of the Dead’ (1978) and altered a number of filmmakers with his horror/suspense fascinations.
