Stylebender

“Stylebender” is a responsive documentary of 2023 centered on Israel Adesanya, a Nigerian-born New-Zealand based MMA champion, directed by Zoë McIntosh. The film steps further beyond confined as Adesanya speaks about his childhood and culture, his individual experiences with gender roles, social pain, bullying, mental health, and the healing related to dance. The film successfully transforms ‘The Last Stylebender’ into a paradigm of sensitivity and complexity, often controversy.

Synopsis

Nigerian Adesanya immigrates to New Zealand and the film captures his metamorphosis from a foreigner into a global name. It focuses on his internal challenges and external transformations as he battles his biggest limelight adversities while uniquely identifying himself as an agile fighter and an anime obsessed dancer.

Release and Reception

Adesanya won the award for Best Film in a Documentary at Tribeca Festival held on June 11th, 2023 where the film first premiered. Other events after include its screening during Zurich Film Festival in September 2023. The film was released in New Zealand Cinemas on September 28, 2023 and became available in Apple TV in 2024, getting international release on 24th September of the same year.

The film received high praise from critics who commended the documentary for its detail and non-fantastical nature.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, “Stylebender does a good job of depicting how a fighter rose through the ranks to become a champion; however, it is an even better motion picture about a man who struggles with his rage. ”

As of December 2024, I would say Stylebender is available on streaming networks like Apple TV and Prime video among others. Depending on the area, certain services may be offered. So, it’s wise to use streaming services that are applicable in the region.
