🎥 Synopsis

The forthcoming feature “Werewolves,” scheduled for a 2024 release follows the life of microbiologist Wesley Marshall (Frank Grillo) who fights to protect his family against the terrors of a supermoon. The film is directed by Steven C. Miller. Upon exposure, humans beam up infection by the light of a supermoon that transforms them into werewolves and consumes their lives, bringing about global chaos. According to reports, the first infection alone resulted in nearly a billion deaths. Society now lives in fear of the forthcoming supermoon.

This is where the story gets interesting. Bolstered with the experience of a soldier and undying love for his family, Marshall works with Dr. Amy Chen (Katrina Law) to come up with a solution that could save humanity. They develop a serum named Moonscreen, aimed at preventing the mutation effects of the moon. But when the test runs, unforeseen horrors arise leading to the destruction the duo sought to prevent.

Wesley and Amy have to navigate the problems related to a city full of werewolves, losing social structure entirely during the night. The werewolves are not the only monsters, the civilization’s breakdown is equally savage. Raced with the time, Wesley’s fortified home is a sanctuary where his family including sister in law Lucy and niece Emma await. Lucy and Emma are holding out for Wesley. The struggle preceding the climax is framed with the blurring line of humanity and monstrosity, driven by cruel consequences which demands desperate survival.

As Wesley Marshall, Frank Grillo – Frank Grillo presents a striking portrayal of the character torn apart with the resolve of a man, describing Wesley the father battling for his family and society and a scientist duty bound.

Dr. Amy Chen is played by Katrina Law – Law embodies a scientist portrayed whose odds for survival of a cure were low driven by dogged determination and commendable bravery.

Lucy Marshall, Ilfenesh Hadera – Hadera takes on the role of a mother, defensive yet protective Hilary Vulnerable furious for the home and child who makes for a multi-dimensional character.

Dr. James Aranda played by Lou Diamond Phillips – Phillips brings life to the lead scientist of the movie. His ambitious meddling meant anything and everything which culminated his character.

Werewolves tackles:

• Survival in the face of change – how humanity endures, or does not endure, when confronting the existential threat marked by its own existence.

The movie adopts a gory and over the top action tone, similar to 70s and 80s B-movie horror, with practical effects portraying the werewolves. Director Steven C. Miller prefers the use of physical effects to CGI, so that the audience enjoys a visceral experience. Cox’s camerawork employs high-contrast lighting to further enhance the struggle between light and dark, humanity versus monstrosity, and obscured vision and clear sight.
